Our October Partner of the Month: Project Focus
October 31, 2024
Each month, the Nursey Foundation is proud to shine a spotlight on one of our incredible community partners, organizations that share our passion for making a lasting impact. This October, we are thrilled to highlight Project Focus, a non-profit dedicated to empowering students and young adults with developmental disabilities through innovative programs designed to foster independence, confidence, and community connection.
Project Focus’ mission is centered on providing opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities to thrive, both personally and professionally. From their pioneering educational initiatives at Focus Academy to hands-on learning experiences at Focus Café, and their commitment to creating a future residential community through Focus Future, Project Focus is changing lives and building a brighter future for everyone involved.
Together, the Nursey Foundation and Project Focus are working to transform lives by giving individuals the tools they need to reach their greatest potential. We believe that every person, regardless of ability, deserves the chance to contribute meaningfully to society, and we’re proud to partner with an organization that shares this vision.
The Mission of Project Focus
At the core of Project Focus is a powerful mission: to enhance the lives of young people with disabilities by equipping them with the skills and support necessary to succeed in all aspects of life.
The Focus Campus goes beyond traditional education, integrating social skills therapies, mental health programming, arts programs, and hands-on training to provide a holistic approach to learning and development. Project Focus believes that every individual has the potential to contribute meaningfully to society, and their programs are designed to make that a reality.
The organization is committed to creating environments where individuals with developmental disabilities can grow, not just academically, but socially and emotionally. By fostering independence and confidence, they support young adults as they transition to adulthood, offering them the tools they need to thrive in the workplace, at home, and in their communities.
Through programs like Focus Academy, Focus Forward, and the Focus Cafe, Project Focus is making a profound difference in the lives of young adults, ensuring that they are prepared for a full and enriching future. Their mission aligns closely with the values of the Nursey Foundation, as both organizations work tirelessly to empower individuals and foster inclusive communities.
Program Highlights
At the heart of Project Focus are several innovative programs that empower young people with disabilities to develop key life skills, build confidence, and foster independence. Each program is thoughtfully designed to address the unique needs of participants, providing the tools they need to thrive in the world.
Focus Academy
Established in 2013, Focus Academy is a trailblazing charter school that serves students from sixth grade through age 22. The academy combines a strong academic foundation with social skills therapies and an enriching arts curriculum.
Every student, regardless of their learning ability, is encouraged to participate in drama therapy, visual arts, and performing arts classes. This unique approach enhances students’ self-expression, communication, and social skills—key components of personal growth.
For those who complete high school, the Transition Program serves students through age 22, and continues to build on this foundation; providing additional training in essential life skills like job readiness and independent living, ensuring they are prepared for the next chapter in their lives.
Focus Café
Located inside the Temple Terrace Family Recreation Complex, Focus Café is more than a place to grab a cup of coffee. It is a fully functioning non-profit business run by Focus Academy’s Transition Program students. Here, young adults receive practical, hands-on experience in customer service, inventory management, and operating a cash register, among other valuable skills.
By running the café, students gain real-world experience that helps them build the confidence and knowledge they’ll need to pursue future employment opportunities. It’s not just about the business skills—they’re learning independence, teamwork, and how to interact with the community.
Focus Forward
Launched in January 2021, Focus Forward is a program designed for young adults aged 22 through 30, offering daily activities and community outings that promote overall skill building and personal growth.
The program goes beyond the on campus lessons, extending opportunities for individuals with disabilities to enhance their social skills, gain work experience, and prepare for greater independence. By immersing participants in a variety of activities, Focus Forward empowers them to explore new opportunities, interact with their peers, and build skills that enhance their future opportunities in a supportive environment.
Focus Future: A Vision for Independent Living
Looking ahead, Focus Future is the next big step for Project Focus. The organization is planning to develop an integrated residential community, where adults with developmental disabilities can live independently or with support.
This innovative community, tentatively named Focus Future, will offer a safe, inclusive environment designed to support the unique needs of its residents, while being an integral part of the greater community. A community within the community is this teams’ vision.
By providing both supported and independent living options, Project Focus helps to ensure that adults with disabilities can continue to grow and live fulfilling lives well into adulthood. To make this dream a reality, the organization is actively working to raise funds for the purchase of real estate, setting the stage for this transformative initiative.
