August Partner of the Month: Wheelchairs 4 Kids

August 6, 2024

At the Nursey Foundation, we take pride in partnering with organizations that make a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most. This August, we’re excited to spotlight Wheelchairs 4 Kids, a remarkable nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the lives of children with physical disabilities.

About Wheelchairs 4 Kids

Founded in 2011 by Lonnie and Madeline Robinson, Wheelchairs 4 Kids emerged from a profound need observed while working with other children’s charities. They encountered numerous children in wheelchairs that were ill-fitting, outdated, or barely held together, impacting their health and quality of life. Recognizing the gap in support for these children, the Robinsons launched Wheelchairs 4 Kids with a clear mission: to provide physically disabled children and youth with a better quality of life through access to wheelchairs, home and vehicle modifications, and other essential assistive equipment.

Programs and Impact

Our CEO and Chairman attended the Jail & Bail event in support of Wheelchairs 4 Kids this July! Aaron had to post a $5,000 “bail” to secure his release from “jail,” but it was all for a great cause. They had an amazing time witnessing firsthand the incredible impact this wonderful organization is making.

  1. Let’s Roll Program: The core of Wheelchairs 4 Kids’ mission, this program provides wheelchairs, home and vehicle modifications, and therapeutic equipment to children with limited mobility due to illness, accident, or abuse. By offering these services at no cost, the Let’s Roll Program ensures that every child can participate fully in life.
  2. Facilities and Equipment Program: This initiative donates gently used items to facilities, benefiting multiple children and expanding the reach of their support.
  3. Wheely Fun Days: Wheelchairs 4 Kids believes in the power of inclusion and adventure. Their Wheely Fun Days take children on exciting outings such as visits to sports training camps, WWE events, indoor skydiving, zip lining, and water skiing, all using adaptive equipment. These experiences build confidence and community among the children and their families.

A Growing Need

Many children with physical disabilities are often left in wheelchairs that are too small or in disrepair, leading to health issues like scoliosis, respiratory problems, and pressure sores. Additionally, families frequently live in homes that aren’t modified to meet their children’s needs, facing barriers like narrow doorways and inaccessible bathrooms. Wheelchairs 4 Kids steps in to bridge these gaps by widening doors, installing ramps, and providing roll-in showers, as well as vehicle modifications to ensure safe and comfortable transportation.

Get Involved

Wheelchairs 4 Kids relies on the generosity of individuals and communities to continue their vital work. You can support them by making a one-time donation or by joining the Guardians of the Wheel Kids Club with a monthly contribution. Each donation helps children gain the independence they deserve, allowing them to thrive in their everyday lives.
